Black Hollyhock 'The Watchman'

Hollyhock 'The Watchman' bears stately 6- to 8-foot tall stems of velvety black/maroon blossoms. These tall beauties are ideal against fences or buildings where they can get natural support. They are the ultimate, easy to grow, cottage garden flowers.

Plant hollyhocks in full sun, in soil that is amended with compost and a good all purpose flower fertilizer. Once established, they can take some drought. It is best to water them in the morning so that the leaves can dry out during the day.

Once the plants have sent up their initial tall flower stalk, it may be cut back after the flowers fade to encourage more flower stalks to branch out. You may let the seed pots dry out and collect seed to sow later.
